Sheltering Sky

A Moroccan-inspired urban retreat, suitable for both summer and winter drinking.

Sheltering Sky is one of the hot spots of the summer, atop the McCarren Hotel and Pool in Williamsburg, with an eclectic seasonal cocktail menu. The name Sheltering Sky comes from an iconic 1949 novel by Paul Bowles, which follows a man’s odyssey after escaping New York City’s intelligentsia. The story of post-colonial alienation and despair, set against the Sahara and North Africa, where the protagonist travels to find the ‘Sheltering Sky’, was adapted into a film by Bernardo Bertolucci in 1990.

Designed by Nur Khan and Fernando Santangelo, the bar too has Moroccan-inspired furnishings, and is designed to be an exotic urban retreat. Come winter, it is transformed into a climate-controlled oasis with fire pits and an enclosed roof that allows drinkers to continue enjoying the view of the Manhattan skyline on one side, and Brooklyn’s own on the other.

Signature Drinks

Pineapple and cinnamon mojito: spiced rum with pineapple, mint, and lime, topped with cinnamon; Hot rum cider: rum, fresh apple cider with seasonal spices
