With its open-air dining room under a retractable roof, architectural lounge and bar and mid-century styled furnishings, Redbird is of of downtown L.A.’s most stylish restaurants. Chef Neal Fraser (of BLD) and his wife Amy Knoll Fraser spent almost six years on the project. The 1930s-built cathedral rectory was transformed into a 130-seat restaurant in the shadow of the former St. Vibiana cathedral’s bell tower and downtown’s skyscrapers.
A curving marble bar (with seating inside and outside) is the focal point of Redbird—cocktails are from Julian Cox (he does get around!) and feature more than six cocktails on tap. The menu showcases Fraser’s innovative take on California cuisine prepared via classic French techniques. Richly prepared choices include veal cheeks, shrimp and mole-topped grits and delightful avocado mousse-filled pastry puffs. There is also a pre-theatre menu and a lounge menu of small bites.
