My Perfect Day - Samy Sass

Urbanologist and Monaco's nightlife impresario shares with U his 'Perfect Day'...

How do you start your day?

If I’m in Monaco, I used to start my day around 9am with a full breakfast based on an acai bowl, avocado toast and eggs. Then, I go to the gym for a complete workout to detox my body and take all the good energy that I need to feel good all day and night.

Leisurely lunch go to?

I often go to restaurants near to the Sass Cafe for lunch meetings or just to relax and have a quick break. I love Asian and Mediterranean food and I am addicted to meat. I go to Song Qi for Chinese dishes, Yoshi for Japanese tastes and Cantinetta Antinori for Italian.

Favourite way to pass the time in Monaco?

Spending time with my family at home. We celebrated our 10 years wedding anniversary with my wife Bruna this year. We have 3 children together (Joshua, Jasmin and Zachary). I am travelling often and I have a busy schedule with the Sass Cafe and my other businesses. Moments with my family at home are really important for me; my family is my power.

Favourite Monaco landmarks, and why?

The Monte Carlo Beach Club. I know this place since I was a child. I used to go there every summer with my parents and my friends. I have hundreds of memories in this peaceful place. I shared exciting moment with my friends and my family. Every year I continue to go there, from May to September. This beach is my little paradise, I meet my friends, I spend time with my family, and on top of that I meet some clients. During the winter I head to the lobby of the Hotel Metropole Monte Carlo. I love to go to this place in the heart or Monaco. I do a lot of meeting in this place, at the bar or at the hotel’s restaurants.

Tipple of choice and favourite cocktail hangouts?

The American Bar at the Hotel de Paris. It’s an historical place in the Principality of Monaco and you can have good time while enjoying jazzy music. I go often to the bar of the Hotel Metropole Monte Carlo, I feel comfortable in this décor with good vibes. I am not a great fan of cocktails; I am more interested in good wines and Japanese whisky, they have a story to tell.

Favourite dining destinations, and why?

I usually have dinner every night at the Sass Cafe, I pay attention to all the details by creating with the chef a special menu with international inspirations. But when I have time, I am happy to go and to eat in other places in Monaco because I am a foodie and I love to discover new restaurants. I also go often to the Robuchon restaurant in the Hotel Metropole in Monaco. When I travel, I love to try different types of food or typical restaurants. In Japan - my next travel destination - I love the restaurants Den and Tempura Kondo for example. When I go to Sao Paulo in Brazil or José Ignacio in Uruguay, I always try the meat, as the taste is incredible there. We do large barbecues with friends; it’s the best type of dinner.

Final stop for a nightcap, and why?

Half of my business is during the night with the Sass Cafe and during the summer time with Jimmy'z as I am consulting for this famous nightclub in Monaco. It’s always my final stop before I go back home. All night, I stay focused on my clients, their needs and goals in order to propose the best experience dinner and nightclub experience.

Best hangover remedy?

Sport, Sport and drink water. I try to have a well-balanced diet. I pay attention to the different kind of food that I take by eating enough protein while paying attention to sugar. When I do too much excess, the gym is the best solution, even if I am exhausted. The exercise is the best and natural remedy.

Where next on your travels?

Japan with my wife.  We have already been three times in this fabulous country and we will spend for my 40th birthday two weeks between Tokyo and Kyoto. I love the food, the culture and the Japanese way of life. Then, we will go to Portugal, my second country – were my dad Sassa is born – as we have a family house in Faro, in the South. Few months ago we decided to spend more time in this country, by having our own apartment in Lisbon, in the city centre of this capital.

Monaco-based Sass Café, is owned by famed restaurnateur Salvador “Sassa” Treves and his son Samy Sass (pictured) and is a celebrated and infamous landmark in the Principality.
